about

I feel like "the music" has always been there. Top 40 radio in the '70s was such a melting pot of styles. Rock, pop, ballads, disco, and more. Imagine hearing KISS' "Calling Dr. Love", followed by Glen Campbell's "Southern Nights". Does it get any better? By high school, my only lasting dream was to be in a rock and roll band. When I was 17, I bought my first guitar at a local swamp meet for $20 and thought about the future. I took one guitar lesson, but when the teacher couldn't teach me a Sweet song, I never went back. I started writing songs almost immediately, some average, some not. A friend of mine started playing bass and suggested that we start a band, playing my songs with me singing them. The only problem; I had never sung before. 6 months, 4 gigs, and two garage bands later, I bought a bass and set out to start a Power Pop group I would call The Holidays. Originally conceived as a teen band (2 of the 3 members would actually be teenagers), I wrote some more songs and looked for the right guys. Fortunately, I met two like-minded players in Mark Schrock and Tony Snow. We played a few all ages clubs and a few small parties, but after a year, Tony left the band (he was always destined for bigger things). My kid brother, Richie, joined us and around the same time, we basically "fell" into this burgeoning Southern California christian music scene that paralleled some of the personal changes in our young lives. We met an early version of Adam Again at a local battle of the bands, and they were kind enough to take us under their wings, giving us opening slots and introducing us to other bands in that scene. By 1985, we had come to the attention of an upstart label out of L.A. called Blue Collar Records, and they made a commitment to us the following year. Unfortunately, by the time we were hoping to release vinyl (yes Virginia, vinyl) - 1987 - the label was quickly and quietly going out of business. Fortunately, a revamped Broken Records came along in 1988 and signed us to, get this, a 5 record deal. Yep, "we were on our way". Unfortunately, the "we were on our way" only lasted 2 records and we were dropped. Although we had a couple of charting singles on christian college radio, we just didn't sell records and the label really had no choice but to let us go. We carried on a few years, but with our main fan base of teens growing up and the emergence of Grunge rock (which none of us dug), the end was written on the wall and we called it a day. Fortunately, all these years later, the band and the music is looked upon and remembered fondly. Most importantly, the friends we made and people we met will always be great memories.

about

Mini Mendez Los Angeles, California

Hi. My name's Mini (it's a nickname) and making music has always been my passion. I didn't pick up a guitar until my late teens, but when I did, I immediately started writing songs - some average, some not. I've started a few bands over the years - The Holidays, The Reckless Ways, The Glimmer Stars, to name a few. This page is mostly for my solo stuff; three-chord songs of love, life, and loss. ... more
